The first occupants of Redwood City were Native Americans from a tribe called the Ohlone. This historic city moved through the era of Spanish Missions into the later 1800s when it became a thriving port city supplying redwood lumber and other raw materials for the rapidly growing city of San Francisco 25 miles to the north. Today Redwood City is the seat of county government with a population of 72,000 and growing. The sizable commercial and industrial districts are on the sea level flat land along with many of the mature residential neighborhoods. However, there are many newer homes built on the beautifully wooded hills to the west commanding breathtaking views of the bay and coastal range canyons. The variety of housing ranges from "affordable" to multi-million dollar estates in over 26,000 individual households. A wide range of public and private schools are available and Cañada College, a community collage, is highly regarded as a feeder school to universities and for its adult education. Sequoia High School ranks in the 91st percentile in national test scores. .....close window
